I’ve spent quite a lot of time considering what to write about in this blog post. I have some very strong feelings about abortion. I also have some very strong feelings about the 2nd Amendment and gun control. So I considered both of these subjects and decided that the 2nd Amendment was the pivotal issue at this time. If the 2nd Amendment is repealed or negated, the issue of abortion will become a lost cause.
The founders wrote the Constitution and set it up as the governing document of the new republic. Then they realized that they had a lot of protections for the government written into this document but none for the citizenry. So they deliberated and came up with the first 10 Amendments. By virtue of their order, the ten amendments can be deemed to illustrate the mindset and the order of concern that those men had at the inception of the United States.
Today we have a lot of people from the common working man to the political leaders clamoring for “gun control” and the dissolution of the 2nd Amendment. The idea of disarming the law abiding citizen is not a new one. George Mason, one of the original founders, quoted Sir William Keith who said, “To disarm the people…[i]s the most effectual way to enslave them.”(1788).
One of the arguments against private ownership of firearms is a semantic argument that only the organized militia is given the right to keep and bear arms. George Mason addressed that in his address to the Virginia Ratifying Convention on June 4, 1788 when he said, “I ask who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officers.” The argument doesn’t hold water given the overwhelming evidence contained in the collective writings of the founders. Another quote which clearly demonstrates their idea is, “The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.” – Samuel Adams, Massachusetts Ratifying Convention, 1788
The Democrat Party led by Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine made it very clear in their recent national convention that they intend to disarm the American citizens. They are not going to try to repeal the 2nd Amendment. They don’t have the backing to achieve that goal, but they don’t have to do that. They engage in political bait and switch, out right lying, ignoring facts and manufacturing facts that suit their purpose, loudly arguing semantics and insisting on the definition they want for a word, trying end-runs around existing law and any other nefarious means that they can dream up.
Hillary Clinton didn’t lie (for once) when she said she won’t repeal the 2nd Amendment. She knows she can’t. At the same time, she was true to her very nature when she claimed she was not coming for your guns. That, my friends, is an outright lie.
